Stretch blow molding units to debut at Pack Expo

Terekas, a European manufacturer of stretch blow molding machines for PET, will begin marketing its FlexBlow machines in the U.S. this fall.

The company’s U.S. marketing campaign will coincide with its participation in Pack Expo, which will be held Sept. 25-27 in Las Vegas. It will mark the first time the company has exhibited its two-stage stretch blow molding machines in the U.S.

Terekas has long discussed entering the U.S. market. Selling two machines to a Canadian customer for the first time two years ago, it has just delivered its latest blow molder to a company in New York. Terekas currently sells its machines in the Baltic states, Belarus, Benelux, Germany, Iceland, Scandinavia, Slovenia, Spain and South America.

The company’s expansion into the U.S. market follows last fall’s launch of a new, smaller PET stretch blow molding machine.

“It’s a reduced-size blower dedicated for those who need flexibility in relatively small production quantities,” said Gintautas Maksvytis, head of Terekas’ export department. “Normally, PET blowers are rather sizable and take a lot of space.”

The new machine is compact. With a footprint of about 5.5 feet by 9 feet, the machine is about the size of a passenger car.

It is available in two models, the FlexBlow 1 and FlexBlow 2, with the model number representing the number of cavities. Both machines can produce bottles with neck sizes ranging from 18mm to 120mm. The FlexBlow 1 can produce bottles ranging in size from 10 milliliters to 10 liters at speeds of up to 1,600 bottles per hour. The FlexBlow 2 produces bottles ranging in size from 10 milliliters to 6 liters at speeds of up to 2,600 bottles per hour.

Interest in the new models is so high that Terekas, which is based in Kretinga, Lithuania, and has operations in Lund, Sweden, plans to hire additional sales representatives by the end of the year.

The new machines join seven larger blow molding machines in the Terekas product lineup.  The company’s highest-speed machine has 16 cavities and can produce 24,000 bottles per hour with neck sizes ranging from 18mm to 38mm and sizes ranging from 10 milliliters to 1.5 liters.

Terekas started 22 years ago as a bottle manufacturer, and subsequently began building its own machines. Company officials recognized the advantages of quick mold changes and the ability to quickly change the size of the necks of the bottles.

As a result, the new FlexBlow machines allow bottle manufacturers the flexibility to change molds in about 4 minutes, and, if neck sizes also need to be changed -  which requires the change of mandrels - the switchover can take place in as little as 20 minutes, a company spokesman said. Only four bolts need to be undone to remove a mold.

The two new machines also allow an unusual range in bottle and neck sizes, the spokesman said. They can manufacture bottles as small as those used for e-cigarette fluid to large 10-liter bottles. The company uses the marketing slogan, “One for all.”

FlexBlow machines are built with standard components from mostly German manufacturers. As a result, replacing parts can be quicker and less expensive than obtaining proprietary parts since parts are available from many vendors, according to the company.

Flexblow at Drinktec

http://www.flexblow.com/

Even though historically custom PET container production was associated to 1-stage machines in the past, the market’s need for higher capacity and smaller tool cost impelled 2-stage PET machine producer Terekas to look at the possibility to fill in the niche. After conducting an in-depth study and discovering market’s technical requirements for flexible SBM machines, Terekas built FlexBlow – a versatile PET stretch-blow moulding machine designed for flexible production and quick bottle format changeovers. The machine was launched in 2016, and it was an immediate breakthrough recognized by bottlers and packaging producers that use a range of different bottle formats.

FlexBlow offers an unprecedented flexibility in a two-stage machine. FlexBlow enables the production of PET containers with neck ranging from 18mm to 120mm and volume range from 10ml up to 6000 ml – all on 1 piece of equipment. In addition to regular cold-fill bottle production possibility, FlexBlow could be used to make hot-fill containers as well, not to mention the possibility to produce oval shaped bottles and containers with T-handle.

Additionally to flexible blowers FlexBlow also has a range of Hybrid series. The standard FlexBlow models have intermittent preform feeding system that guarantees maximum flexibility: wide range of neck and bottle sizes. On the other hand, FlexBlow Hybrid models have continuous preform feeding system and a combination of rotary and linear motions, that increases capacity, yet the flexibility is somewhat narrowed. The largest machine FlexBlow Multi was designed to compete with high capacity rotary machines, and it is essentially a combination of two eight-cavity Hybrid models connected together.

Versatile Stretch-Blow Molder for Wide or Narrow Necks

FlexBlow reheat stretch-blow molder makes bottles with 18-to-110-mm necks and supports quick changeovers.

UAB Terekas of Lithuania is presenting the newest version of its highly versatile FlexBlow RSBM system. The all-electric, two-cavity FlexBlow 2 WM is able to produce both wide-mouth (up to 110 mm) and narrow-neck (18-mm) containers. It can mold up to 73-mm necks in two cavities and wider in one cavity. Bottles from 1.5 to 3 L can be molded at 700 to 750/hr. Changing the bottle format, including molds, neck, and gripper parts, and fine-tuning the machine settings afterwards, takes no longer than 30 min, says FlexBlow marketing manager Gytis Sirvinskas. Changing just the mold requires loosening four bolts and takes only 5 min. FlexBlow is demonstrating live changeover daily of this machine that can mold wide-mouth jars, cosmetic bottles, and large bottles.

A number of upgrades on this model include new control functions such as an integrated operator manual and troubleshooting guide, and reporting of machine production and efficiency statistics for performance tracking. The challenge of automatically loading preforms with a wide range of neck diameters is addressed by a dual preform loading system. Adjustable feeding slides allow loading preforms with very small support rings (down to 0.8 mm), suitable for cosmetics jars. Inversed preforms with a body wider than the neck can also be handled by the feeding system. And both air and water cooling are now available to cool the neck inside the oven.

Another new feature is customized preform grippers made by 3D printing. This allows for very precise detailing for custom designs and permits quick changes, too. One FlexBlow customer ordered grippers for five different neck sizes, so Terekas color-coded the grippers in anodized aluminum.
